Welcome to Walk to School 2019!

Walk to School is a VicHealth community initiative designed to get more students and their families up and moving by walking, riding or scooting to and from school. The program aims to inspire kids and their families about active travel by challenging Victorians to develop healthy habits by walking to school during the month of October.

Why is walking to school important?

Walking to school is a great way for kids and parents to reach their recommended 60 minutes of exercise per day. Whether your kids are riding, scooting or walking, it’s a great way to encourage kids to stay active and healthy.

Walking to school is also a great tool for building relationships. It’s a great time to chat about what kids are excited about for school that day, what they learnt, or what upcoming assignments they have at school. Walking with a group of other kids also helps your kids to meet more of their peers and interact with their parents, walking together is a fantastic way to build strong, healthy relationships!

We recommend dropping your kids off at different locations close to the school so that kids get an idea of how to navigate their local area and can pick out different landmarks and streets around their neighbourhood. This also exposes them to different crossings and roads around your area, a great way to build their road safety skills. Kids can learn more about all the big roads in their area and where all the pedestrian crossings and traffic lights are. To make walking maps for your local area, visit our resources page for templates.

There are so many different reasons to walk, ride or scoot to school! It’s a great way to fit in your daily 60 minutes and teach your kids about road safety, all while building strong relationships with your kids and their friends.

What’s new with walk to school this year?

VicHealth have made it even easier for schools and communities to get involved in Walk to School this year! Councils and schools are no longer required to submit data, just enjoy walking to school for fun! You can encourage your students to walk, ride or scoot to school by keeping a tally of your kids walks in our walk to school calendar which can be found here.

We also have a brand new competition for kids and parents to get involved in which you can find out more about by clicking here. Kids have the opportunity to win an awesome footy prize pack which includes a personalized video from an AFL or AFLW player!

We have even more councils on board this year who are keen to help their communities increase physical activity and find new ways to get to school.
